Feb. 9, 1825: The House of Representatives elects John Quincy Adams, a notable abolitionist, president after nobody wins an electoral vote majority.

He was given this ivory cane in 1844 to commemorate his efforts in defeating the "gag rule," which prevented congressional acceptance of antislavery petitions.
