Terry T. Shima stopped by today to be interviewed by the team from NPR's Code Switch.
Shima grew up in Hawaii and served during World War II in the Army's 442nd Regimental Combat Team. It was a segregated unit of Japanese Americans and became one of the most decorated units of its size in American history.
Beginning on February 19, 2014, we will display the Congressional Gold Medal, an award bestowed by Congress and the highest civilian award in the United States. It was with this medal that Congress officially recognized the heroic wartime contributions of these units in the face of official injustice and wide-spread harassment.
The motto of the 442nd? "Go for broke." It appears on the medal.
