I was 19 and my mother was 49 when she was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder. Doctors said the condition was incurable and would be terminal—“Statistically speaking, ten years, tops,” they said.

I couldn’t stop asking “Why?”
It became the self-torturing, unspoken narrative in my mind:

Why now?
