Today, Suriname is the smallest independent country in South America. Made at her own expense, she was accompanied by her younger daughter Dorothea.   The trip resulted in a magnificent work, ‘Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium’ (The transformation of the insects of Suriname) published in Amsterdam in 1705, which brought her international acclaim.
