The glittering appearance of this tea-bowl stand is an example of ‘chinkinbori’, where fine gold dust is rubbed into grooves incised into a lacquer surface✨
Tea bowls were used at formal tea gatherings and placed on stands like the one shown here.
As well as serving as a beautiful art objects, these stands had the practical function of supporting the delicate and narrow tea bowls as they were passed between participants 🍵
