Today is #InternationalPoetryDay! These moving words were composed by the Japanese poet Ono no Komachi, shown in this woodblock print 🖋

Very little is known of Komachi’s life – she was probably born in ancient Japan between 820 and 830 AD and likely served at the court of Emperor Ninmyo (833–850 AD).

Her poetry was appreciated in her own lifetime, though her mystery and talent has turned her into an almost legendary figure today.

Komachi’s poems often deal with the concept of ‘mono no aware’ – the sadness of things, and explore loneliness, the passing of time, and lost love.
