This incredible marble figure is almost 5000 years old ✨

From around 3300 –1100 BC, the people living on the Cycladic Islands of the Aegean Sea made thousands of predominantly female figures from marble.

With stylised anatomical features, these figures have been discovered on settlement sites and in graves of both men and women, and their abundance suggests these early societies each attached a cultural or spiritual importance to women or femininity.

Their flat, geometric shape has inspired many modern artists including Modigliani and Picasso 🖼

You can see this figure alongside other objects celebrating women in our international touring exhibition – ‘Feared and Revered: feminine power through the ages’ is currently on display at @nationalmuseumofaustralia.
