Welcome to the Tang Dynasty bakery – can we interest you in a 1,300-year-old jam tart? 🍰

These pastries are a remarkable survival from mid-8th-century China, and were preserved in the dry desert conditions of Turfan.

They were buried in the Astana Cemeteries, alongside other objects to accompany the deceased into the afterlife.

As well as these pastries, archaeologists have found embroidered silks, paper documents, and decorative objects made from wood and clay.

Together, they can help us to understanding what daily life might have been like for the people living along the Silk Road, and the kind of items they used and enjoyed.
