For over 25 years, writer John Jeremiah Sullivan has scoured antique shops and eBay for vintage photographs, focusing on the early history of Black music in America at the turn of the century.
Sullivan shares his unique collection with #MoMAMagazine, reflecting on the overlooked and often unidentified people the photographs capture: originators of jazz and Blues, as well as the Pullman railroad porters who attended to passengers on sleeping-cars, stevedores playing dice on a Missouri wharf, jockeys in racing silks, carrying tack, and coal miners in the mountains of Appalachia.
“The images are all that is left,” he writes. “The images, and a particular message they seem to bring, that these lives mattered.”
