Hine combined his skills as a photographer and sociologist to record the working lives of children like Sadie Pfeiffer.  In her playlist inspired by our exhibition exploring 100 years of textile production, "Taking a Thread for a Walk," on view through this Sunday, January 10, singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash (@mrslev) paired this photograph with Nina Simone's I Wish I Knew How it Felt to Be Free.  “Nina Simone was an activist—and a revolutionary, really—for her time," Cash observes. "I was thinking about this image of the little girl in the cotton mill, and how she was never free, ever. You’re not creating beauty just for the sake of beauty, you’re in service... Artists are in the service industry for the heart and soul."
