In remembrance of #JohnOutterbridge, who died in December, we're taking a close look at the artist's loaded assemblage from 1978-82, "Broken Dance, Ethnic Heritage Series."

Made from scavenged metals and rags, Outterbridge constructed a doll-like figure with truncated appendages that sits atop a small ammunition box equipped with an extended radio antenna.

The sculpture "exists in a quivering state of becoming," Nomaduma Rosa Masilela writes in an essay for our publication, Among Others: Blackness at MoMA, now available to read on #MoMAMagazine.
