DAILY BOWIE THING – Day 48

“Clutches of sad remains...”

It’s likely the great majority reading this will know about cassette tapes. They’re still manufactured and are by no means as redundant as yesterday’s #DailyBowieThing, the laser disc.

However, their popularity is nothing compared to what it was before the advent of CDs and streaming/downloads. But that’s not how it used to be.

Pictured here is the June 1973 issue of MUSIC ON TAPE. This 12-page publication focused on cassettes and 8-track cartridges and among its pages was an advert for Aladdin Sane for both of those formats.

There was also a review of Aladdin Sane which concluded thus: “David Bowie is just about the most exciting musical and visual entertainer to have emerged in recent times and he's only just starting. He is going to be a giant — if he doesn't explode first.”

Thankfully for us, he didn’t choose the latter.

If this is an area of collecting that appeals, check out John Carroll & Leo Rodia’s exhaustive site: BowieOnTape.com – But, be warned, as brilliant a resource as it is, BowieOnTape.com may make you think twice before you embark upon this enormous task.

Photography fans might like to know that the image of DB on the front of MUSIC ON TAPE was taken by Masayoshi Sukita in New York in 1973, while the cover of Aladdin Sane was shot in London by Brian Duffy the same year. As if you didn’t know.

Anyway, what’s a hexagonal pencil got to do with all this? What do you mean, “What’s a pencil?”
