DAILY BOWIE THING – Day 47

“Waiting for the gift of sound and vision...”

Some areas of Bowie collecting can appear quite unusual to those not afflicted and redundant formats is one of those areas that may leave some scratching their head.

There was a time before the DVD and Blu-ray disc when Laser Discs had their day in the sun.*

They were LP sized heavy silver discs that were often beautifully packaged and were the future for a while.

This particular example is the 1992 Criterion Collection release of The Man Who Fell To Earth (we thought we'd stay on a TJ Newton trip today), which came as two double-sided discs with superb extras including (for the first time) audio commentary from director Nicolas Roeg, and two of the film’s stars Buck Henry and David Bowie.

Some collectors have large collections of laser discs but with no means to play them. When pressed as to why? …insert your own answer here.

For future instalments of #DailyBowieThing, we’ll soon be looking at 8-track cartridges, mini-discs and wax cylinders.

*It is not recommended to leave laser discs in the sun, even for a day.
