No doubt some of you reading this discovered Bowie via such a collection, be it anything from CHANGESONEBOWIE (1976) to Bowie Legacy (2017) or one of the various compilations in-between. Today’s #DailyBowieThing focuses on K-tel’s The Best Of Bowie, released forty years ago today. A superb compilation that contained 16 singles edited to fit on one album in chronological order. However, the live version of Breaking Glass was conspicuous for not fitting chronologically and not even appearing on the back cover’s track-list on early UK and French pressings. According to those early sleeves, the more fitting (for the timeline) Drive-In Saturday should have been on the record, but it wasn’t. This oversight was covered up with a sticker over the incorrect listing. It’s easy to find second-hand pressings where the stickers (along with the sleeve varnish) have been removed to reveal the original incorrect running order. According to the very thorough Illustrated DB Discography, there is also a “French mispress (K-tel BLP 81001/NS 4119) that lists 'Breaking Glass' on the sleeve but plays 'Drive-In Saturday' instead and on the B-side replaces 'Young Americans' with 'Beauty And The Beast' and 'Breaking Glass'.” The Best Of Bowie was a hit around the globe (excepting North America where it was unreleased), reaching #2 on the UK album chart.
