First things first: Bootlegs are a bit naughty. *

However, since Dylan’s Great White Wonder released back at the dawn of time, they have been an integral part of music culture.

David Bowie has been a consistent target for bootleggers ever since the first ones appeared in 1973, taken from a radio broadcast of his concert the previous year with The Spiders in Santa Monica.

There’s a long list of illicit recordings that eventually got released officially, the Santa Monica 72 show being one of the better-known ones.

In fact, many years ago, and with David’s encouragement, we asked if there were any bootlegs out there that you feel should get an official release. And now we’re asking the same thing again to see how different the list is. We won’t influence your selections by reposting that original list now.

* We can’t tell you anything about the vinyl shown here as it’s not ours. We took a picture of it on a car boot sale table this morning, near a criminal. Probably.
