Photos by David Chancellor @chancellordavid / A white male giraffe at the Ishaqbini community conservancy in Kenya. Initially rangers had spotted three giraffes here. These are not albino but exhibit an extremely rare genetic trait called leucism. This inhibits skin cells from producing pigment but allows other organs such as eyes to be dark colored. Albinism, a congenital condition, inhibits the body from producing pigment in all organs, and animals with this condition often have pink eyes. In March a female and her calf were slaughtered by poachers, leaving only this male.

As a result, on Sunday, at the request of the community at Ishaqbini, a combined operation of @nrt_kenya and @kenyawildlifeservice placed a global positioning satellite unit on one of the ossicones (horn) of the surviving sub-adult male giraffe. It will allow rangers to monitor its movement, and in doing so keep this extraordinarily unique, gentle creature safer from poachers. Safeguarding wildlife is enormously complex, as is the whole conversation about intervention and the collaring of wildlife. In this case, I believe that sadly this is our best chance at helping to protect this special animal. I’ve flown over him a few times and marveled from afar at nature’s magnificence. The fact that there were three and now only one is way past presenting a metaphor for man’s relationship with nature. It’s simply evil. To see more follow me @chancellordavid. @nrt_kenya
