Photo by @erintrieb / One year ago, in November 2019, thousands of Iraqis organized to protest Iraq’s sectarian political system and government corruption. For several months Iraqi youth successfully occupied central Baghdad, where hundreds of protestors were killed and thousands injured, prompting Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to resign. COVID-19 brought Iraq’s protests to a halt, with the rise of curfews and social distancing, but the impact of the protests continues to ripple through and in some cases upend the status quo. Here protestors take cover behind a homemade barricade after Iraqi security forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets. For more human stories from around the world follow @erintrieb.
