Photos by @florianschulzvisuals / The outgoing Trump Administration is moving to complete a last-minute oil lease sale in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, as the Interior Department set a process in motion to approve a new seismic survey of nearly half a million acres of the refuge's coastal plain.
The proposed survey involves hundreds of miles of seismic exploration "trails" that would result from 90,000-pound seismic vehicles crisscrossing the fragile tundra. It would scar the landscape and threaten denning polar bears. Such a proposal typically requires a lengthy environmental review, but the administration appears poised to fast-track the process in order to get seismic testing under way before the Biden Administration takes over.
