This is Jerry Rawlings, who was a flight lieutenant in the Ghana's air force—and four-time president of the country—when he gave me an afternoon on the parapet outside his office at Osu Castle, in June 1985. I was on my first international assignment, and I was thrown in the jail for a week in neighboring Burkina Faso for taking pictures of smugglers crossing the Ghanian border. Rawlings got word of my predicament and personally intervened to have me released. A revolutionary leader who led his country out of a post-colonial crisis, Rawlings was also an expert military jet and helicopter pilot. Leading Ghana was a tenuous position in 1985, and somewhat hidden in this picture was a small pistol he kept in his left boot.
