Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge is on the left and Picayune Strand State Forest on the right. The second photo shows a wildlife underpass, combined with high fences along the road to funnel wildlife to cross safely beneath the highway. Panthers and other large animals are rarely killed on the fenced segments of I-75. But few roads have fencing and underpasses, leaving vehicle strikes as the leading recorded cause of death for Florida panthers—more than 30 per year.
