In the 1940s, pachucos were Mexican American working-class youth known for their highly stylized fashion—especially the zoot suit. In the second video in our Latinas Talk Latinas series, curator Verónica A. Méndez examines the ways in which young Mexican American women embraced pachuco culture, and how their fashion stood in defiance of Mexican gender norms, second-class citizenship, and white middle-class ideas of American womanhood.

A collaboration between our museum and @slc_latino, the Latinas Talk Latinas series explores the stories of 10 Latinas as told by curators, scientists, and educators across the @スミソニアン博物館.

Are you an educator interested in bringing the history of pachucas into your classroom? Follow the link in our bio for a Learning Lab collection that accompanies this video: https://s.si.edu/3oeAQOp
