Photo by @dashaunaemarisa / I had the pleasure of meeting Yolanda, Jason, & Harper Lucas while working on a story for @ナショナルジオグラフィック about infant mortality. Yolanda and Jason struggled with infant mortality for 10 years before their son Harper was born. “I internalized everything for a long time. As we look back a lot of things could have been avoided but we were in such a painful place we did not use our voices back then,” she says. In 2006, Yolanda met with evangelical preacher Joel Osteen who suggested that Yolanda “activate her faith.” Yolanda went on to buy a new SUV and carseat to prepare for her child. “The difference is that this baby is going to live,” she said. Jason Harper Lucas II was born in July of 2007. Yolanda is celebrating 20 years in business, 25 years of marriage, and the life of her son Harper. #women #maternal #health #cleveland
