Photo by @annieflanagan / Rae Garringer began the Country Queers oral history project in 2013 and now hosts the podcast. Most of the project’s initial audio came from a road trip they took in 2014, interviewing 30 people in 30 days. “So many lesbians grilled for me,” Garringer says. “It was summertime, so all the butches got their grills out and made food.” Here, Garringer is pictured with goats Trillium and Thistle where they live in Kentucky. Though COVID-19 has demanded physical isolation from others, Garringer feels more connected to a broader queer community now that events have been moved online. “Making things accessible online is exciting for me at least, as a rural queer person.”
