Photo by @nicholesobecki In Sudan, the sands of time feel fluid. History merges with the present, and today’s generation is looking to their past to understand and forge a cultural identity. Here, a team of archeologists and workers excavate a Meroitic palace and royal factory to grow our understanding of how people lived in the Kingdom of Kush, just beside Jebel Barkal earlier this year. The story of these pyramid builders was recently evoked by protesters in Sudan’s popular revolution that overthrew President Omar al-Bashir and ended his almost three decades in power. Abdelmonim Fahmi, relaxing here in the Omdurman market with friends, was among the first to join the protests. "The chant ‘Our grandfather was Taharqa, our grandmother was a Kandake' moved many of us to protest," he told me. "The government wasn't just repressing us in the present, it was tainting our entire history." #sudan #history #identity
