Taiwan recently had its first 10,000-person arena concert since the pandemic began. @ericchou0622 became the first artist to perform at Taipei Arena since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted for large gatherings in early June, after Taiwan had recorded no new locally transmitted cases for eight weeks. Heading into the Aug. 8 show, Taiwan had record 479 cases and seven deaths among a population of over 23 million. Strict measures like temperature checks and masks were still required. Safety protocols included a requirement that concertgoers provide a physical ID or a designated QR code that would facilitate contact tracing should the need arise. It had been more than a year since Chou performed his first show at the arena. "Last year, I was just very nervous," he says. "This year, it's a feeling more like returning home." Chou's concert—sold at full-capacity and in an indoor space—signaled that in Taiwan, a return to something like normalcy, at least for live music, might happen sooner rather than later.
