President Trump visited Louisiana and Texas on Aug. 29, two days after Hurricane Laura made landfall as a Category 4 storm and carved a path of destruction that has left hundreds of thousands without water and electricity. More than half of at least 16 deaths from the storm are from carbon monoxide poisoning tied to the unsafe use of generators, the Associated Press reports. "I'm here to support the great people of Louisiana," Trump said in Lake Charles, La., where the AP adds that he toured a storm-ravaged neighborhood and met with relief workers and officials but not with residents of destroyed homes. In these photographs since landfall: Birds stand near downed telephone poles in Holly Beach, La., on Aug. 28; an aerial view of damaged homes in Grand Lake, La., on Aug. 27; Javier Palacias, who sheltered inside a closet during the storm, stands outside his apartment at a Motel 6, where he has lived for the past six years while performing property maintenance, in Lake Charles on Aug. 28; a tree on a home in Orange, Texas, on Aug. 27; pieces of metal surround a vehicle in Lake Charles on Aug. 28; and derailed train cars in Lake Charles on Aug. 29.
