Laura, now a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to make landfall overnight near the Texas-Louisiana border, according to the National Weather Service, bringing a "catastrophic storm surge, extreme winds and flash flooding" along the northwest Gulf Coast. More than half a million people were ordered to leave their homes, the Associated Press reports, marking the country's largest evacuation of the pandemic era.
