In a historic display of collective power on Aug. 26—days after Jacob Blake, a Black man, was shot seven times in the back by police in Kenosha, Wis.—athletes in the NBA, WNBA, Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer declined to play their games that day. (The Washington Mystics, shown in the second image, wore T-shirts that spelled out Blake's name; on the back were markings representing seven bullet holes.) That night, tennis star Naomi Osaka announced she wouldn't play her Thursday semifinal match. "I respect the hell out of them for doing that,” John Carlos, the American sprinter (right) who famously raised his gloved fist along with Tommie Smith on the medals stand at the 1968 Olympics, tells TIME’s @sgregory31.
