In Pune, Kashinath Kale, 44, was admitted to a public hospital with the virus on July 4, after waiting in line for nearly four hours. Doctors said he needed a bed with a ventilator, but none were available. His family searched in vain for six days, but no hospital could provide one. On July 11, he died in an ambulance on the way to a private hospital, where his family had finally located a bed in an intensive-care unit with a ventilator. "He knew he was going to die," says Kale's wife Sangeeta, holding a framed photograph of him. "He was in a lot of pain." Sangeeta was photographed with her sons Akshay, left, and Avinash outside their home in Kalewadi. Read more about how the pandemic is reshaping India at the link in bio.
