“Justin Fashanu was the first professional footballer in England to come out as gay and to this day is the only British male professional player to have done so.” – Rachel Ridealgh is Community Librarian for Local Studies at Norfolk Library and Information Service, and chose to highlight Justin Fashanu’s story this #PrideWeekend.

Our touring exhibition ‘Desire, love, identity: exploring LGBTQ histories’ visited five UK venues over the last two years. Each added objects from their own collections and communities to the show, highlighting local LGBTQ histories and connections.

These objects were added at Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library – they focus on Justin Fashanu, who began his football career at Norwich City Football Club in the late 1970s.

Rachel says: “These objects were chosen for inclusion in exhibition by Norfolk Heritage Centre’s young Community Curators group because of the challenges faced by Fashanu as a gay, Black professional footballer, and his inspiring legacy.” Find more LGBTQ histories selected by partners, volunteers and researchers via the link in our bio.
