This #PrideWeekend, we’re sharing objects selected by our LGBTQ tour volunteers, and people who have helped research these histories in the collection.

First up is this early 18th-century dish depicting Queen Anne, picked by museum education specialist and LGBTQ historian Jack Shoulder.

Jack says: “Terms such as ‘favourite’ and ‘close companion’ have often been used to euphemistically describe same-sex relationships, and these types of relationship are at the heart of ‘The Favourite’, the 2018 film starring Olivia Coleman, where we saw a new side to Anne and her court.

But is all of this fiction to win an Oscar, or is there basis in fact?
