Travel back over 3,200 years and visit Thebes, the capital of Upper Egypt and one of the most important ancient Egyptian cities.
The bustling city lies around 500 miles south of the Mediterranean on the banks of the River Nile. Thebes is a great centre of commerce so there’s lots to see and do, and loads of food to try including freshly baked bread, figs, imported olive oil and tasty local beer.
In the 13th century BC the city is full of monumental new constructions built under Ramesses II, the reigning pharaoh, so the vast temples are certainly worth visiting. There you’ll find the sights, smells and sound of rituals, like in this papyrus showing a priest with an incense burner.
