This figure depicts Idrimi – a refugee who fled Aleppo in Syria about 3,500 years ago and became a king.
The inscription on the statue contains the story of his life – one of the earliest political autobiographies ever found. Idrimi was in exile in Canaan in the Southern Levant for seven years until the storm-god Teshub told him in a dream that he was ready to return as a triumphant king.
With Teshub’s blessing, Idrimi built a fleet of ships, sailed up the coast, and attacked the ancient city of Alalakh (in the south of modern-day Turkey), where he would rule for the next 30 years.

As king, Idrimi had this statue made with his life story carved in cuneiform from head to foot across the front. Read the compelling story via the link in our bio.
