Around the time of my debut, I made a work called Randoseru Project, for which I made Japanese elementary school students’ uniform backpacks with hides of endangered animals already circulating in Japan in violation of CITES. At a first glance, the bags looked lovely and evoked childhood memories, mostly receiving nostalgic, positive feedbacks. But the fabricator told me that despite the materials violating CITES, it was possible to import them at will so long as he used a special route. My work was intended to expose this reality to the society, wrapped up in cuteness.
Though that was 30 years ago now, when I first made my debut as an artist, I was also hoping to uncover the darkness that existed adjacent to our society.
I therefore can strongly empathize with the YouTubers and understand what motivates them to do what they do. And I think in the current claustrophobic mood and situation people desire them even more.
Eventually, perhaps, curators for YouTube channels would emerge and, like museum curators, they will expound on the contents in detail… Perhaps it needs to become its own enclosed world.
But all I wanted to say here was that I can very well relate to the young YouTubers who are running full speed while treading the fine line. And that’s because I believe they are true artists.
Talk about YouTuber thing is the end. Thank you for reading.
