First, there is an idea. Some are attracted to that idea. People gather around it. Once a large number gathers, chaos ensues. In order govern the chaos, politics emerge. The balance between the attractive idea and politics starts to tip. Politics start to dominate. The idea shrivels over time. The shriveled idea loses substance and is rendered powerless.
The cult religion I had observed in my childhood was something of this nature. That is why I only had skepticism toward the mechanism of the mind of those who believed in religion. Something like the Great Buddha of Nara I had mentioned, with its production cost in the billions of dollars, I thought, could very well be a powerless, empty shell soaked in politics. Yet, the wonder of art is different from mere politics.
People who are involved in the production of art become aware of beauty and arrive at the state of selflessness in order to achieve that beauty. Days of such selfless work accumulate, and howls of the countless people involved become sealed into the work of art. This happens even without the awareness of those involved. Therein resides the fascinating enigma of how an artwork comes into being. Art is a rather callous entertainment that allows the viewer to appreciate the human karma.

This is a sculptural installation of two Oni demons with a gate signifying the entrance to the capital. The gate was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s famous film, Rashomon, which was in turn based on writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s stories, and modeled after Rajomon, an actual gate to the ancient capital of Heian (Kyoto). I have placed the two enormous demons next to it for a narrative installation about blasting natural disasters and epidemics with a divine rage. The demons, then, are glaring at the horizon of the chaotic future.
