Most people I see say ‘well done on Magic Line’ which is really nice of them and comes with only good intentions. However I like to keep a check on how these comments make me feel. ⠀⠀ Social affirmation is powerful and I don’t want it to turn into a need for validation, make me too achievement-orientated or fearful of failure. It’s easy to let our thoughts, emotions and decision-making be swayed by the need for social affirmation and approval. Failure exposes this painfully but it’s just as important to keep a check on it after success too. Why not achieve for social approval? Well firstly: it’s never satisfactory; once you have achieved and received approval you want to maintain it and immediately search for the next goal, like a dog chasing its tail you go round in circles looking for your self-worth in the approval of others. Secondly it means your motivations line up wrong. To achieve things we need to be intrinsically motivated: we need to want to do things because there is value in those things in and of themselves not because they will result in anything (like approval). I needed to be interested in Magic Line because the process brought learning and a valuable experience not just because of the send-reward at the end. Thirdly, it makes the prospect of failure unbearable. If you need social validation you won’t be able to fail which means you won’t be able to challenge yourself properly and challenge is where the magic happens. 💫 ⠀⠀ Anyone else see themselves seeking out approval from their peers? Knowingly or otherwise? @blackdiamond @lasportivagram」12月8日 20時08分 - hazel_findlay
