There is no electricity, heat or working computers. Many teachers write out school materials by hand. One teacher said she has fewer books than students. Only 5% of the students’ parents can read and write, said Mohammad Sadiq Nasiri, the principal of Rustam, a remote Afghan school. Yet Rustam’s 2017 graduating class saw 60 of 65 graduates accepted to Afghanistan’s public universities — and two-thirds of them were girls. Unlike principals at most Afghan schools, Mohammad mixes boys and girls in his classrooms. “Men and women are equal,” he said. “They have the same brains and the same bodies.” When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, the education of girls was banned and women were mostly confined to their homes, especially in rural areas like this one. The current passion for education, especially among girls, is a reaction to that era. “These kids all know that you can’t make a slave out of someone who is educated,” Mohammad said.
