What if you mapped the major American artists of the past century, in the years they appeared in the nation’s most prestigious exhibition? What would the landscape look like? We mapped the over 3,600 artists who have appeared in the @whitneymuseum Biennial. Mapping these locations tells a story of influence and power — but also one of friendships and creative communities, of housing prices and economic change, of landscape and light. This year, a majority of the show’s artists are women, and they are racially and ethnically diverse.
