“I like that she’s a human princess,” Katherine Williams, or @ktwil14, said of Princess Florine in Alexei Ratmansky’s “The Sleeping Beauty,” which @abtofficial performs through Saturday at the @metopera. “She’s in love with the Bluebird, and he comes to her window every night and brings her jewels. This variation is about her calling to him; they’re trying to escape together.” Before she got the part, Katherine didn’t realize that Florine was a princess, not a bird. “It opened my eyes,” she said. “A lot of people play her as a bird, especially in the way they use their arms.” The dancer performs chaînés — turns on both feet — on demi-point, with the weight placed on the ball of the foot, rather than on full point. Katherine likes them, though they're difficult: “It’s harder to fit your legs together,” she said, but “I think they're cute." As Florine, Katherine told the #nytimes writer @giadk, “everything that I do is warm and light. It’s like a love pas de deux, but because it’s a fairy tale it’s not that passionate. It’s a lighter love.” @angelo_vasta made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the word of #dance.
