Cori Gauff, the 15-year-old American who upset Venus Williams in the 1st round of Wimbledon yesterday, is the latest tennis prodigy in a long list of youngsters who periodically revive interest in the sport. But as tennis has become more physically demanding, tales of physical injury and cumulative mental strain have emerged and raised questions about how to sustain the health and wellbeing of rising stars. The @WTA(女子テニス協会) normally limits girls to 10 professional tournaments at age 15, but Cori has earned a merit increase to 12 events, which means she can play 5 additional pro events before she turns 16 next March. “The intent behind the rule is pretty good,” said Corey Gauff, Cori’s father and longtime coach. But he also said Cori feels more pressure to perform because of the limit. “She’s like pressed because she doesn’t feel like she’ll get another chance.” Click the link in our bio to read more. @jane__stockdale shot this photo.
