I should do that again some time”. Immediately I wondered, why is it that I haven’t actually missed painting that much as something I had done for many years?⁣ ⁣ The answer came to me while I was editing this picture. I haven’t missed painting, because I haven’t stopped doing it. I just have changed my medium. No, this is NOT a #preset, and let me tell you this, no preset will magically transform your picture to what you have in your mind. ⁣ ⁣ Of course there’s the time factor. You may think you use a quick and “nice” solution for your Instagram, and your pictures will look like the perfect photos of the famous instagrammer you purchased your preset from, but most often they won’t.⁣ ⁣ The truth is that editing is a lot like painting. You need to “see” light and shadows, you’ve got to have a sense of volume and movement, and you’ve got to have the technique to play with these elements, just like with watercolor. To use that famous proverb, a preset is like a small fish that may sustain you for a day. While editing is a skill, and just like fishing, it allows you to sustain yourself for good.⁣ ⁣ During my intermediate chiaroscuro workshop on May 5th, we’ll treat the photos like paintings. First we will style the scene with right shadows and lights, and then we will go through #lightroom and/or #photoshop to edit each picture to get the best effect we’re looking for.
