Kirstein’s innovative vision for the possibilities of dance included cofounding the New York City Ballet—and several precursor companies like the Ballet Caravan—with choreographer George Balanchine, in addition to founding the first scholarly publication in the United States devoted to dance. Throughout these endeavors, he enlisted the contributions of visual artists. His donations of costume and set design works helped create MoMA’s Dance Archives and the curatorial department of Dance and Theatre Design. Now on view.
