The principle behind #OnKawara’s “Today” series seems simple enough: paint the date on a single-color ground. And yet the operation produced nearly endless variety. Kawara set some constraints, limiting the canvases to nine specific sizes and the background colors to red, blue, and dark gray. He traveled frequently, and so wrote the date of each painting following the conventions of the country where the work was made. Most important, each painting needed to be completed to satisfaction by day’s end, or else it was destroyed.

Each individual painting offers a simple bit of information deadpan, but together powerfully address the vastness of time and its relentless passage. See an expanded selection of works from the series in #TheLongRunMoMA—a celebration of innovation sustained late into artists’ careers.
