“Artists should not look to the left or the right. Art should be strong and nonconformist—and most importantly, art should always be personal.” –#IsaGenzken

Throughout her career, Isa Genzken has used her art to give three-dimensional form to her fascination with new technology, incorporating and commenting on the electronic systems that were beginning to pervade homes and offices. “Slot Machine” (1999), now on view in #TheLongRunMoMA, is Genzken’s first large-scale multimedia sculpture incorporating everyday objects. Later, in “New Design for World Receivers” (2002), her focus shifts to larger structures that resemble the architectural fragments of failed utopias. Her painting “MLR” is titled as an abbreviation for “more light research,” evoking German writer Goethe’s 1832 deathbed cry for “more light.”

#TheLongRunMoMA celebrates continual creativity with works made later in artists careers. Explore more women artists and share your inspirations with #5womenartists.
