“I want to praise and caress the great majority, the American working people...Every curve of their lives I want to render with fanatical sensitivity and creative realism.” –#HonoreSharrer

Lincoln Kirstein fell in love with “Workers and Paintings” when he spotted it above the fireplace in American artist Honoré Sharrer’s home. He purchased the painting, and soon donated it to MoMA. A sketch for a mural competition, the work depicts ordinary families presenting and reacting to well-known paintings, including Grant Wood’s iconic “American Gothic” (1930) and Pablo Picasso’s “Girl Before a Mirror” (1932). Now on view in our #LincolnKirstein exhibition.
