GDP rose 2.6% in the fourth quarter of 2018, the Commerce Department said. The increase beat the expectations of economists, who forecasted a 2.2% rise following a 3.4% gain in the third quarter.
The growth came amid a time of economic uncertainty and a time when the market briefly slipped into bear market territory.
Even with the weaker fourth quarter, economic growth was strong for the year.
According to the Beaureu of Economic Analysis, GDP rose 2.9% for the full year in 2018 — just short of President Donald Trump’s 3% goal.
