She sleeps so deeply these days, with laboured snores and sometimes a tongue poking out, oblivious to our presence. It's hard to believe that less than a year ago, people were still mistaking her for a puppy. Now they approach with sad, compassionate eyes: Oh hey there, old girl.
My face just crumpled as I typed that.
I reflect incessantly on my 20s in Toronto. If you're a single woman, on the fence about bringing a dog into your life, I can only say our partnership through those years was the most golden of my life so far. Riding the subway with Gracie by my side invited people to say hello, to introduce themselves, to light up, to share their stories, even in those groggy morning hours when commuters keep to themselves.
She's spread so much joy, this dog.
And in the evenings we'd head home together still, the sun setting a thousand times in the mirrors of skyscraper windows.
