If you're anything like me, you're scrolling through recap after recap of 2018, up to your eyeballs in envy or self-loathing or just a general fog of can't-measure-up-ness. These highlight reels are presented as "reflections" or #gratitude, but the dark parts of your heart poke and prod you in response: Why isn't MY life brag-worthy? So let me tell you what I tell myself in these moments: If your life's details were similarly paraphrased, the highlights, the mundane joys, the tears and everything in between, I guarantee—GUARANTEE—that someone somewhere would feel similarly covetous. Of your life. Yep. Yours. They'd envy you because you're free and single or they'd envy you because you're cozily married. They'd envy your successes and celebrations, as surely as they'd envy your character-building hardships, your lessons hard-learned, and your tragedies that read like poetry when glimpsed only briefly on Instagram. They'd long for your free time or your packed schedule, your view of the ocean or your life bustling amongst skyscrapers. They'd long for what you have and what they don't because THAT'S WHAT HUMANS DO. And they did it long before social media. So take a moment and look back again. Curate. Distill. Scour lovingly. And think of a moment in the past 12 months, a dusty memory that fills you with peace or warmth or a sense of accomplishment, even if it was nothing but hard at the time. Think of that thing you put off FOREVER and can now finally put behind you. Or that food you finally tried. Or that place you finally saw. Big, small, it doesn't matter one bit. Did you clean out a particularly nightmarish closet? (I did, yesterday, and it felt GREAT.) Did you decide you'd like to start saving for the trip of your dreams? Did you make a new friend or set a toxic one free? Did you give yourself permission to sit on the couch and be sad for a while? Or did you get yourself up and moving after a long rest, because your spirit was finally ready? Think of that thing, that one shining thing, and give 2018 a well-deserved high-five. Because you made it. In your own perfect way, you made it. And honestly, I'm a little envious. ?✨
