When I first went to Peru for @ナショナルジオグラフィック it was to photograph an expedition to the Andes that was recovering Inca mummies from high altitude burials south of Cusco. One of them became known as the Peruvian Ice Maiden. Maybe because it was my first National Geographic assignment, but I have always felt a strong connection with her. She was a girl of 16 wrapped in exquisitely woven textiles frozen into the 21,000-foot summit ridge of Mountt Ampato. The weaving tradition was strong in this part of the Andes for centuries, but by the time I arrived it had languished. With a grant from National Geographic, the Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco has helped revive, preserve, and pass on the Andean weaving tradition. The women of this cooperative still dye yarn in the traditional way. Their work is wonderful. Today they make a replica of the Ice Maiden's wrappings. Seeing a copy of her wrappings brought back a flood of memories from that first assignment. Of course I’m bringing a set home. #Peru
