Photos by @richardbarnes | While I was a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome I witnessed and photographed massive swarms of starlings descend on the city each evening in the winter months. As dusk falls, the birds take flight in dense cloud-like formations known as murmurations. Surging through the sky, staggering numbers of starlings maintain fluid and cooperative movements as a flock, performing acrobatic displays in the evening sky. Ornithologists are not quite sure why they do these flocking maneuvers and how the birds keep from crashing into each other. And like finding seemingly recognizable figures in the shapes of clouds overhead, we humans bring our own sense of order and wonder to the shapes the birds make, even though the starlings, most likely, have no knowledge that their movements were enthralling to me, observing, beneath them. Working with film and a Hasselblad camera at a fast shutter speed, I embraced the grainy effect of the analog process and its ability to recall the almost granular appearance of the birds in flight. #murmuration #contemporaryphotography #rome #starlings
